TOPE KAVU
(Swahili for dry mud) is a design studio reclaiming mud as a material of beauty, meaning, and possibility.
In a world flooded with fast fashion and plastic waste, we aim to craft narrative driven, objects: including adornment, artifacts and architecture; using one of the earth’s oldest materials.
Objects intended for heirloom, as opposed to the landfill.
We source emotionally potent influences: sometimes whimsy and playful; sometimes meaningful, weighty and full of gravitas: including nature; cultural symbols and stories; life rituals, craft narratives and cultural nostalgia. We do all this while committing to intentional material stewardship. Traditional artisanal modes of making meet technology, in service to this goal.
